I recently read about a young woman who discovered a fortune in fine china in her deceased mom’s attic. Having never seen the set before she inquired with older relatives to determine its origin. As it turns out, her mom received the china one piece at a time as gifts for her birthday, anniversary, etc. Her mother loved it so much that she packed it up rather than risk breaking it. She was saving it for a special occasion that unfortunately never came.
At first I thought how awful, I would never do that. Then it hit me that I already had. Last week I was going through my closet trying to figure out what I was going to wear for an upcoming lunch event. I pulled out a dress that I had never worn before, and I thought – this is it! I had been saving it for just the right occasion. Tried to put the thing on and it was too small! Can you believe it shrunk it my closet?? Man, what a waste.
Imagine how much more of life we would enjoy if we recognized each moment has it’s own special magic. There’s no need for us to wait around for something, anything to jar us out of our humdrum existence. Every day offers something to celebrate, appreciate, and admire. It’s all about our perspective.
Let’s make life sweeter by creating our own special moments. Wondering how? Here are 8 things I can think of off the top of my head:
- Get up early, grab a cup of coffee and watch the sun rise.
- Sit quietly for a few minutes listening to a bird’s sweet serenade.
- Schedule a “just because” date with your best friend or your honey.
- Invite your family over for dinner and serve it on your best dishes.
- Try something new once a month and invite your friends to come along.
- Host a “we’re doing great” work party to celebrate progress toward a goal.
- Have dinner with your kids – all together, at one time.
- Build a fire, snuggle with your babies, and read a good book together.
Life is all about the memories we make, and the love we share. Other than our relationship with God, they are the only things we have that will last beyond this lifetime. Those occasions that happen every now and again? Sweet, but certainly no more special than the precious moments we have with family and friends.
The next time I think about saving something for a more special occasion, I hope I remember the china in the attic. Yes, I want to pass on heirlooms to my children. But more importantly, I want to leave behind a legacy of love. I want them to know I treasured them enough to share my very best. I want them to see the china in the attic, and have memories that go with it that bring smiles to their faces long after my life fades away.
I hope you too are inspired to appreciate the magic in each moment. Today, this minute, is all we’re promised. I pray you live it abundantly.
Loving on Me as I Love You. ❤
