September is self-improvement month. As a recent graduate, it seems odd not to be returning to college, ready to embrace new courses and learning opportunities. However, learning and self-improvement don’t have to end when we leave academia. We all have the opportunity to improve, step out of our comfort zones and try something new in our daily lives.
Whether you’re learning a new language or how to golf, self-improvement usually requires something none of us have enough of – time. We give so much of our time away to friends, family members and our professions that we often forget to budget time for ourselves. We can’t let the hustle and bustle of everyday life hold us back because the timing to pick up something new will never be just right.
In light of self-improvement month, ask yourself where can you improve – intellectually, physically and emotionally? And what steps are you taking to get there? Are there things you’d like to change? New ways in which you wish to grow? A hobby you’ve been wanting to try?
Make a plan and commit to YOURSELF. This month, I’m focusing on a few new self-improvement “projects”. I’ve joined a local oratory club, I’ve started mentoring a youth robotics team and I’m trying to start working through the long reading list I’ve developed the past year or two. Self-improvement is empowering, exciting and more often than not – fun! Need a little extra motivation?
“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” ~ Jim Rohn
“Make the most of yourself….for that is all there is of you.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, and become a better version of yourself.” ~ Madonna
“I always did something I was a little not ready to do. I think that’s how you grow. When there’s that moment of ‘Wow, I’m not really sure I can do this’ and you push through those moments, that’s when you have a breakthrough.” ~ Marissa Mayer
