He was standing on the corner waiting for the light to turn red. As the cars came to a stop he hobbled forward on one leg, hoping someone would spare some change. What’s his story I wondered, as he glanced inside my window.
Tired eyes met mine as I considered what to do next. He waited a beat or two, but when I didn’t roll down my window quickly he continued down the road.
I was on the fence about whether to call him back when suddenly I saw a woman two cars back jump out and bring him some money. Her small act of love inspired me to join her. So when he turned back toward the corner I rolled down my window and beckoned him over. As he accepted my small gift he said…
Thank you ma’am. How are you?
Fine, how are you?
I’m good. 3 days sober. I go back to the clinic on Monday. It’s day by day, you know?
Yes, I do know. And believe me honey it’s day by day for all of us.
I was reminded of this exchange in church yesterday. Near the end of the service Pastor held an altar call, asking all those who were suffering financially to come forward. He wanted to pray with them as a church body, that the miraculous would be manifest in their lives and their fortunes restored.
My heart was heavy when I saw so many people go down front, and yet I was hopeful. For there is one thing I know for sure – with God, anything is possible. So as Pastor prayed I was praying too, and when we finished I was pumped up! I knew that God was going to show up as only He can. Little did I know he was going to use us to do it!
As we turned to leave Pastor said hold on a minute. I want all of you sitting in the pew enjoying God’s blessings to be a blessing to those at the altar. We’re going to take up an offering and whatever we raise we’re going to divide equally between those standing before us. I’m starting us off with $100. Who will join me?
So many rushed down to share that my eyes filled with tears. We had prayed for the miraculous. God had replied – You Be the Miracle!
Isn’t it amazing that it really is that simple? Regardless of whether we are in need or in position to plant a seed God’s instructions to us are the same – be open and obey. He will bring gift and giver together in due season.
Life ebbs and flows for all of us. In one season the harvest may be plentiful. In others there is a famine in the land. Even those who seem to financially have it all together are often hungry in other areas of their life. That’s why we have to be open to hearing God’s voice, and be careful about sizing people up based on what we see. For their needs may be beyond what our minds will let our eyes envision.
Let us be sensitive to the call of compassion, and look eagerly for opportunities to share our abundance. Whether it’s the homeless man on the corner or a single mom struggling to make ends meet, God will bring people in our path for whom we are to make a difference. Don’t just pray about it. Be about it. You Be the Miracle! And together, let’s transform our world. One act of love at a time…
Loving on Me as I Love You! ❤
