Lord I’m running, trying to make a hundred…ninety-nine and a half won’t do…Granny’s got a goal, and she’s singing a new song to let the world know she is on a mission.
This past weekend I spent some time with her in anticipation of her upcoming birthday. I arrived a few days before the big event and one of the first things she said to me was…
You know I have a birthday on Tuesday.
You do? How old will you be?
I’ll be 93 years old.
Then she started singing..Lord I’m running, trying to make a hundred…ninety-nine and a half won’t do…
I said, “Granny is that your goal?” She said, “Yeah child, you gotta be striving for something.”
Isn’t that awesome? At 93 Granny still has plans for the future. She’s set a goal, and she’s reaching toward it. Thank God she has made up her mind to live as long as she’s alive.
If you’re a long-time reader of my blog, you may remember my post from her 90th birthday celebration where I shared some of her wit and wisdom. They were lessons learned from a life filled with incredible highs, and lows most of us can’t even imagine. Chronic illness, the loss of 3 husbands, and burying 5 of her 9 children way too soon are just a part of the trials that have dotted her life. Yet in spite of it all, she continues to persevere.
I constantly marvel at her ability to smile and keep on keeping on, but what struck me the most this time was that at 93 she has the audacity to have a goal. Can you imagine? After having nearly seen it all, and in some cases twice, she wants to stick around to see what’s next. Her zest for life is such a poignant reminder that at every age, and in every season, God has so much more in store.
That’s why I couldn’t wait to get back and share this happy moment with you! Because sometimes, well let’s face it, you and I just go through the motions. We live but our lives lack any excitement for being here. We stop dreaming and believing that God could possibly have more for us to learn, experience, and enjoy. We get complacent, lulled into a life that is alright, although less than fulfilling.
But Granny’s gumption reminded me that it doesn’t have to be that way. We can aspire for more no matter the season. God’s great creation is full of wonders to be explored, and no matter how old we get, we can always have hope for good things to come.
I don’t know about you, but I want that kind of joy in my life. I want to keep striving for bigger and better things even as I get closer to life’s second season. So I’m setting some new goals, embracing an air of expectancy, and boldly believing the best is yet to come.
How about you? What’s your goal for this stage of your journey? I hope Granny’s enthusiasm for life encourages you too to aim higher. This life we have is so precious. Let’s live it until the very end!
Loving on Me as I Love You!
Hugs and Blessings ♥
