Say No to Negative

Ladies, it’s time for us to cut the cattiness. All the gossip, backstabbing, and spiteful commentary are getting old. And more importantly, it’s hurting our sisters and our collective power as women.

I rarely write like this but it seems over the last several weeks I’ve experienced an increasing number of women denigrating other women. It always seems so benign when it starts. We’re sitting at lunch with a group of friends and all of a sudden someone will say, did you know…and then what follows is something that honestly, would have been better left unsaid.

It’s sad really, that our conversations so often include the negative. Some salacious tidbit that we just have to share or we’ll burst. Worse still is when we share the news and then add at the end, we really need to pray for her. And then everyone shakes their head like we’ve done our Christian duty by sharing someone else’s business that will be passed on to God knows who for what purpose.

I don’t know about you, but I have to believe we are better than that. And I use the term ‘we’ intentionally as I am sadly in the boat with you. After all, last week I was sitting at the table and listening too. But on the way home I started feeling icky, like I had handled something slimy and it left a gross residue all over me.

That’s what it’s like when we wade into areas where we have no business. Long after we exit the scene, the impact of what we’ve seen and heard stays with us. Often we find ourselves recreating what we’ve experienced with a whole new group, simply because we’ve allowed ourselves to get comfortable with the cattiness.

But ladies, I’m calling us to higher ground! Let’s change the conversation so that we edify and uplift rather than cut each other down. Let’s create a network of love committed to encouraging one another through our trials, and celebrating each other’s triumphs. For who better to understand our unique life journey than a sister traveling the same road?

Will you join me in creating a sisterhood of love? We don’t have to be from the same place, live in the same town, or share similar backgrounds. All we need is a shared commitment to love other women – in our actions, attitudes and behavior.

Madeleine Albright said there is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women. Well that may be true, but in the meantime I’m thinking we should work together to create a more heavenly atmosphere here on earth. Who’s with me?

Loving on Me as I Love You!
