No, that’s not a typo in my headline. Yes, that melody in your head is the can’t-help-but-make-your-body-move song Celebration by the one and only Kool & The Gang. Just thinking about it lifts my soul and mood. Do you think they knew when they wrote this in 1980, that it would become an anthem that transcends generations?
I mean, think about how much we all need to hear this message about community right now:
There’s a party going on right here, a celebration to last throughout the year. So bring your good times and your laughter, too, we’re going to celebrate your party with you.
It’s time to come together. It’s up to you. What’s your pleasure? Everyone around the world, come on! It’s a celebration!
I don’t know about you, but I want to be a part of a community like that – one that comes together to celebrate life and lift up each other. I spent a lot of down time during the holidays thinking about this and what steps I can take this year to contribute to the kind of community in which I want to live.
Loving On Me’s Katrina McGhee recently asked us for one word to describe what we want to do in 2017. My word is elevate.
- Elevate my faith.
- Elevate my physical health.
- Elevate how I parent.
- Elevate how I date and find love again.
- Elevate how I work.
- Elevate how I serve my community.
- Elevate my financial health.
Over the past decade, I’ve been turned inside out through ups and downs. God has been chipping away at me, reshaping my mind and heart. How many of you relate? I’m ready to turn pain into passion and elevate areas of my life that I never thought possible, and in turn, help others have hope that they can do the same.
Now more than ever, I pray for all of us to elevate our thinking, living and loving of ourselves and others so that our collective anthems of hope transcend differences, distance and time – and yes, maybe even make you want to dance and celebrate good times.
What anthem are you writing now that will leave a legacy of soul-lifting joy for generations to come?
It’s up to you. Elevate good times. Come on!
