At the beginning of the year people usually make resolutions or spend time writing down their goals for the year. Although it doesn’t seem like a big deal please believe that it is vitally important. Not only does it set our course for the year, but it also can impact us in ways we couldn’t even imagine. Let me explain.
I have a ritual for the beginning of each new year. Part of this routine, is a deep cleaning of my home and physical space. I try to declutter as often as possible, but around the beginning of the year I am in full force decluttering and getting-rid-of-junk mode. During a particularly fun and dancey session (hello Sabroso by Mongo Santamaria) at the beginning of this year, I was organizing my bookshelf and a folded sheet of paper tumbled out of an old journal.
My interest was piqued because I could see the date at the top. It turned out to be a list of goals I wrote for myself over two years ago. When I started reading through them – both personal and professional visions – I was absolutely floored. As someone who makes a lot of lists, I couldn’t remember sitting down and writing these. Like, at all. Zero. Zilch. Nada! Yet, when reading through them I realized they described my current state in life. Many of these goals that I set have already come to fruition.

All I could do was sit back and be overcome by gratitude. I’m not quite where I want to be yet, but this helped put some things in perspective for me. I dreamt, prayed, fought for, failed, and cried (a lot) to get to where I am today. But here I am! So often we become overwhelmed with the current demands of life and our future dreams that we don’t stop to appreciate where we are and how far we’ve truly come.
More importantly, this inspired me to take some time to think through and write my current goals. I don’t make resolutions, but I do believe it is imperative to set goals and milestones for yourself – mental, physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, career, etc. We don’t always know exactly where we’re going, but writing out a vision helps give us a general direction and something to focus on. It’s kind of like mapping out your life on a GPS. How can you ever get there if you don’t know at least the general direction you want to go?
So, why should you write them down?
- All of the good mojo, positive vibes, and juju! There is power in just speaking and writing things into existence (like the law of attraction).
- Writing down your goals and having an accountability partner more than doubles your chances of successfully achieving them. When over 60% of people abandon their New Year’s Resolutions within 6 months, why not try something different?
- Speaking them out loud and writing them down gives you a road map and outline for your goals so you know where to focus your energy. Even if it doesn’t go as planned, because we all know life usually doesn’t, this can still help you set boundaries and focus on what’s important.
“The discipline of writing something down is the first step toward making it happen.”
Lee Iococca
