Ting a ling ling the school bell ring, summer is here and we all can sing…
Summer, summer, summertime
Time to sit back and unwind
Here it is, the groove slightly transformed
Just a bit of a break from the norm
Just a little somethin’ to break the monotony
Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be…
And think of the summers of the past
Adjust the base and let the alpine blast
Pop in my CD and let me run a rhyme and put your car
On cruise and lay back ’cause this is summertime”
“Summertime” by Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
As a professional in the education system, I would just like to say that the summer break is necessary for both children and adults. So often we ensure that the children are having fun and are quite occupied in summer programs, but what about you? Have you made plans?
I would like to share my TOP 7 summer plans and ask that you follow my lead and share with us what you will be doing:
1. Have a stylist color my hair a ruby red, spiced cognac, blue or purple then polish my hands and feet a color that will make the sun follow me.
There’s just something invigorating about letting loose and just doing something you normally wouldn’t. When I look in the mirror after changing my hair style or color, it tends to put me in a super fun mood and what better time of the year to just be FREE!
Break the chains of stereotypes and do something that goes against your norm. Go ahead and cut, color or highlight. Stop boxing yourself in. If you’re not allowed to wear “radical” colors to work, then put it on your toes. At least you know that your toes are in the sand, even if you’re not.
2. I am intentionally taking the next 21 days to form new habits which include morning meditation, Soul 2 Soul run club and the new 21 Day Fix program.
Committing to something isn’t easy, but I believe that with support and an intentional focus, you can accomplish whatever you decide. Set summer goals and stick with it.
3. Purchase a new swimsuit that hugs everything close and allows me to feel confident when I attend those pool and beach parties.
I plan to actually go in the water and enjoy the festivities. What sense does it makes to just attend and watch the fun from the sidelines? Do you remember when we didn’t have a care in the world or worry about what people thought? I am here to remind you that this is our time now to live life to the fullest.
4. Complete a Soul Purpose project that will be ready to launch in the fall. It will include my humanitarian interest, passion and purpose.
We were all created for purpose so maybe it’s time to complete or expand on your project. Put a timeline on completion so you can see what you’ve accomplished in the next two months. Stop procrastinating. The world is waiting on you!
5. For the acquisition of more knowledge, I will be reading two books this summer.
My choices are “In Pursuit of Purpose” by the late Dr. Myles Munroe & “War of Art” by Steven Pressfield.
Sometimes we come into a dry place and can’t explain the block in our mind. This is because we keep pouring into others and there comes a time when we have to remove ourselves from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just escape in a book. To continue giving, we too must be filled.
6. Here in the Bahamas, we host an annual Junkanoo summer festival where, for the first time, I will be free dancing to the beat of goat skin drums, cow bells, whistles and various brass instruments.
I am coming out of my comfort zone and trying something new. Why don’t you look around your country, city or state and do the same? It can only add value to your life.
7. Traveling always seems to be a tradition so I plan to keep that on my list.
I’ll be looking for a vacation spot where the ocean comes up to the door and dinner for two happens every evening, coupled with a long walk on the shoreline.
Even if it’s just for three days because grandma has other plans, then make it happen. Whether you have a significant other or not, take this time for you. Include a girlfriend, a sister or friend. Just enjoy some good food, a tropical drink and some great music.
Together, let’s make Summer 2015 one that we will never forget! Just how songs like “Jump” by Kris Kross, “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice and “Barefoot Blue Jean Nights” by Jake Owen still take us to places of laughter, food, fun and great conversations; create new memories this summer while living & laughing out loud!

Better late than never Russell; just seeing this. This is awesome. You are demonstrating that we can let our hair down and still achieve personal development at the same time. Wonderful. This is insightful and motivating. I like numbers 4-6 most.
